Domestic Violence Center, Wilmington, NC

This NC57 Leadership project completely refurbished a children’s playroom including furnishings, art, and equipment. June 2003.

Durham Battered Women’s Shelter, Durham, NC

This NC81 Leadership project transformed a barren backyard into a “Learning Garden” for the habitants of the Shelter, with a focus on educating children about the environment. The work involved major repairs, installation of a privacy fence, buying furniture and creating a garden with plaques and artwork that educated children about plants, birds and butterflies. March 2006.

Exploris Museum Raleigh, NC

This NC69 Leadership project created a Refugee Children’s Center at the museum.  Newly arrived refugee children from such countries as the Sudan, Vietnam’s Central Highlands, Somalia, Ethiopia, Laos, North Korea, Burma, and Rwanda have weekly classes to learn skills to support them in American in a fun and dynamic setting. Budget: $12,000. November 2004.

Fox Ridge Community Center, Raleigh, NC

The NC37 Leadership center provided limited educational assistance for children ages 9 to 15. This project created a computer laboratory and reading room.  March 2001.

Raleigh Rescue Mission, Raleigh, NC

A team of ten people from NC29’s Leadership Program transformed a vacant lot next to the Raleigh Rescue Mission into a beautiful landscaped park, playground, and picnic area for families.  Where there were once broken beer bottles and drug paraphernalia there are now children laughing and playing, and families in transition feeling a part of the community.  The team named the park “Legacy of Love.”  January 2000.

SAFEchild Child Abuse Prevention Agency, Raleigh, NC

This NC33 Leadership project created an English/Spanish Library, a mural for the children called “wall of dreams”, and upgraded a playground. Budget:  $30,000.  October 2000.
