Djoungolo District Hospital, Yaoundé, Cameroon

 Djoungolo District Hospital, Yaoundé, Cameroon

WorldLegacy NC189 leaders stand for abundance, freedom and
love in the world. This team chose to manifest their vision by creating an extreme makeover of the Djoungolo District Hospital waiting area. This project aligned with their vision because it provides a safe and beautiful space for people and their families who come for healthcare. Patients and workers can now feel respected and that they matter. A clean place of peace and wellness has been created for all those who use the hospital. WorldLegacy’s NC189 Leadership Team will be inspiring future generations of leaders by letting Africa know that anything is possible. The hospital staff now work in a safe environment that enables them to care for their patients.

A team of ten World Legacy leaders from around the world created this project and only one member of the team lived in Cameroon. The team created video conference calls at 4 am EST each day starting two weeks before the actual work weekend to contact businesses in Cameroon to enroll them in donating materials.

This project installed a new concrete floor (3700 square feet) in the large outdoor waiting area after removing the existing crumbling concrete floor. Five additional walls (833 square feet) were constructed, with aluminum double sliding windows, to provide protection from the rain. The windows were equipped with steel burglar proof bars. The walls were all painted. A wood door was installed to provide privacy in one of the rooms. The electrical system was updated, and 24 new fluorescent lighting fixtures were installed. Before this project there were no lights in the area.

In addition to the massive construction, the furniture was updated, and 20 five-seater stainless steel benches were installed. The area for hospital waste was cleaned and relocated away for the waiting area and four large garbage bins were provided.

Budget: $26,275 October 2021.

WorldLegacy’s NC192 Leadership Team’s vision is a united world filled with peace, freedom, and an abundance of love. We are committed to a world where everyone is safe, and free to be their authentic selves. When people live as one, they take care of one another as though we are one big family; children roam freely and safely, people treat each other equally.

We chose to manifest our vision by creating a healing space at the Youth Crisis Center in Jacksonville, Florida. This space will now provide a safe and welcoming place for individuals who have gone through trauma and are seeking professional assistance. The space is used for those in crisis care, mental health counseling, skill-based group training, and/or those attending transitional living service programs. Our mission is to assist and promote safety, acceptance, and awareness for people navigating the mental/brain health journey. We are committed to people being seen and heard.

Our team renovated a 1162 square foot room. The renovation included painting the entire room, installing new commercial carpet, repairing, and repainting the cabinets, and providing 12 commercial grade tables and 70 commercial grade banquet chairs. Girls Matter Elementary Program Classroom, Florida

Girls Matter Elementary Program Classroom, Florida

WorldLegacy NC 191 leaders stand for love in a responsible world. The team chose to manifest their vision by creating an extreme make-over of a Gregory Drive Elementary School classroom. This project was in conjunction with the Dolores Barr Weaver Policy Center, Girls’ Matter Elementary Program. With a newly upgraded classroom, the girls can begin to learn in a comfortable environment created specifically to support their needs. This project has created a place to learn and thrive for girls that have endured trauma in their young years. The classroom will be used for grades three – five. The room accommodates a weekly rotating group of five girls. The new learning environment will have the girls get that they matter and create a space where they can be their best. The classroom will have bright colors, new furniture, and educational equipment to assist them in improving their academic performance. The girls’ interest in their education will translate into the academic success that can result in entirely new possibilities for their lives. They will be able to dream big and reach for the stars!

The team painted the built-in bookshelf, the entry door, and a large cabinet. The classroom was equipped with twelve Fire HD 8 kids pro 8″ tablets, a wooden office desk, an ergonomic office chair, twenty-eight chairs, two large tables, two lockable filing cabinets, two commercial grade carpets, a microwave, a refrigerator, two white bookshelves, eight bean bag chairs and four dry erase tables.

Budget: $15,500 July 2022.

Isigudu Primary School Durban, South Africa

Isigudu Lower Primary School Natal, South Africa

World Legacy NC188 Leadership chose to create an extreme makeover of classrooms in the Isigudu Lower Primary School in Durban, South Africa. Isigudu Lower Primary School, located in Ndwedwe, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, teaches 78 children aged five to nine years old.  Due to lack of funding, the school had been unable to keep up with updates over the years. The roof and rafters were completely exposed with no ceilings in the classrooms. The floors consisted of damaged concrete and the walls were dingy. There were no bookshelves or lighting in any of the classrooms.

The NC188 leaders stand for abundance, freedom and love in a united world. This project was selected because it created abundance in a poor rural school that had a scarcity of resources. With upgraded classrooms, the team believed the children could thrive in their education and start to believe they could be their best.

When NC188 declared the project, the team did not realize all the challenges they would encounter. NC188 chose the weekend of July 23, 2021 for the project weekend. Ten days before the weekend, the team of nine individuals started enrolling businesses in South Africa to donate supplies for the upcoming project weekend.

First challenge:  Given that seven of the nine team members lived in the United States, they chose to meet over Zoom at 3 AM each day to call businesses in South Africa.
Second challenge:  South Africa had many COVID19 restrictions including struct curfews.
Third challenge: There was civil unrest in South Africa and riots broke out in Durban.  The area was gripped by a frenzy of looting, arson and violence. In fact, one of the businesses that agreed to donate materials was burned to the ground. The team was not thwarted. Failure was not an option.

The team created a miracle. On the weekend of July 23, 2021, 110 volunteers teamed up with NC188 to install new ceilings, luxury vinyl plank flooring, and fluorescent lighting in five classrooms. The classrooms were all painted, bookshelves were provided and an avocado tree was planted. The avocado tree symbolizes the abundance that exists in the soil and will continue providing nutritious fruit for learners for 30 years to come. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held simultaneously in person and virtually on Zoom on July 25, 2021 at the school. After this extreme makeover, the school resembled the quality and finished level of an expensive private school.

Abundant Clean Water Malawi Africa

Abundant Clean Water: Malawi, Africa

WorldLegacy NC185 Leadership team’s vision is a world of love, peace, integrity, and equality. NC185 is committed to creating transformation in the world where every child grows up with respect, love, and access to education. NC185 is a team of people from all over the world and stand that we are a world community. NC185 chose to leave a legacy in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. This was the first WorldLegacy leadership project in Africa.

Fourteen individuals from all over the United States and abroad, created an extreme endeavor from January 11- January 19, 2021. They committed to funding the installation of one new well and the refurbishment of ten additional wells in a community in Malawi, Africa in only nine days. There were many potential obstacles including the fact that it was the rainy season in Malawi.

This ”Abundant Clean Water” project was meant to reduce the amount of time and labor required for families to fetch water. The work would provide employment for people in the community and increase opportunities for education, thus enhancing the quality of life and improving health in the community. These wells would allow children to attend school and have an adequate education instead of walking for miles and miles each day to fetch clean water.

WorldLegacy’s NC185 declared to provide a total of eleven clean water producing wells across multiple communities in Malawi. One well will be newly drilled and installed with “smart” technology. Ten existing and inoperable wells will be repaired and upgraded with “smart” technology. DOXA’s “smart” technology will allow remote monitoring of the wells via satellite for operational integrity and water use by their respective communities.

The team committed to raising $25,000 in five days, donate the money to You Turn Ministries, a US-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization that would the immediately transmit the funds to DOXA Wells Holdings LLC in Malawi to manage the “smart” well installation and repair. You Turn Ministries has been in operation for 20 years and has donated funds for the drilling and repair of more than 70 wells in Malawi. A team of people in the local village of Malawi would perform the installation and repair of the wells. Before the team started the fundraising on January 8, 2021, both You Turn Ministries and Doxa Wells committed to the well installation.

Fundraising started on January 8, 2021. By the third day, the team exceeded their original goal of raising $25,000 and had raised $34,017! On January 11, 2021, a team of people from DOXA Wells, boarded an airplane in Chicago, heading to Malawi, carrying parts for the repairs and installation of smart pumps.

The team chose to be extraordinary and continued the fundraising. By day five, the team had raised $52,917. On January 19, 2021, all work was completed, and a ribbon cutting was held both in person and virtually on January 21, 2021. Over 50 people were in attendance celebrating this extreme project. The project had expanded from eleven wells to a total of 25 refurbished wells and two new wells! In addition, DOXA drilled one additional well. The Project Abundant Clean Water left a huge impact in Malawi and thousands of people now have access to clean water thanks to the WorldLegacy NC185 Team, DOXA Wells, You Turn Ministries, all the volunteers and the 289 people who donated money.

From Marlena Tracy, Covenant House
Subject: World Legacy Ribbon Cutting Evening!

 Hello All,
Last weekend, the WorldLegacy leadership team and a group of volunteers, completely refurbished our computer room on the 2nd floor.  This extreme makeover project was the culmination of WorldLegacy’s three-month leadership development program.

Covenant House Greater Washington was selected for this unique project, where the leadership team is responsible for designing the project from start to finish under the following parameters —they cannot use any of their own money, cannot raise money, must involve the community to be partners and do 75% of the work, and the project needs to be completed in three days or less.

It was astonishing to witness an international group of young people in bare feet, some painting in masks, while others worked on their knees laying tiles, being continuously encouraged towards excellence by their supervisor. Even the warm temperatures in the building did not deter them from attending to every detail.

These young people are the epitome of selflessness and love. Their energy, spirit, tenacity and teamwork was remarkable.

The evening culminated with a ribbon-cutting as WorldLegacy presented their gift to us. I was moved by the inspirational words and deep emotion the young people expressed along with their gratitude for the opportunity to share their love and impact the lives of young people experiencing homelessness, disconnection and exploitation in Greater Washington.

I drove home reflecting on the message of the evening and the cutting of the bright blue ribbon — truly thankful for the work that we do impacting the lives and future of the youth in our community.

Covenant House Greater Washington was well represented by Board Member, Kelly Mikel Williams, Former DC City Council Member and Advisory Council Member, Sandy Allen as well as Walter Allen, Cliff Rodgers, Reverend Thomas Hawkins, Marketing Strategist Lya Wesley and me.

Regards,
Marlena
