WorldLegacy Ronald McDonald House New York

Ronald McDonald House New York

WorldLegacy’s NC174 Leadership Team funded a family guest room for an entire year by raising $13,060 in less than a week.  The money pays for multiple families to stay for free at the Ronald McDonald House New York City. This money will fund a family guest room for an entire year. This way families can stay for free, as long as they need, while their children are receiving lifesaving cancer treatments. Some of these families need to stay for weeks or months at a time.  A child with cancer should not have to face it alone.  They get to be healed, play and be nurtured.  They created a fun superhero party for the children.

In addition to the financial contributions, NC174 donated the following items:

  • Fifty pillows

  • Fifty Corelle cereal bowls

  • Two complete stainless steel cookware sets

  • Fifty boxes traditional medicinal tea

  • Two hundred and fifty stainless steel forks, spoons and knives

  • Five steam irons

  • Fifty toys (art crafts, puzzles, playdough)

A superhero celebration was created for the children.  See Press Release

    Total Budget:  $16,800

St. Helena Catholic School

St. Helena Catholic School

WorldLegacy’s NC166 Leaders built a playground for St. Helena Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota the weekend of Nov. 3-5, 2017. This project was accomplished in spite of freezing temperatures, snow and rain. In order to install the playground and court items, temperatures needed to be at least 45 degrees. The large painted asphalt games required at least 24 hours to cure in above 45 degrees temperatures.

As the temperatures plummeted, the team realized that the project could only be accomplished by building above ground enclosures to create conditions that were dry and warm. In effect, a second project was designed and implemented in less than 24 hours to accomplish the first project!

The above ground enclosures were created using 10,000 pounds of scaffolding ($550), 9,000 square feet of plastic ($1750), 500 pounds of propane ($1000), and three propane heaters. Once the enclosures were constructed, the ground was dried with squeegees, mops, newspapers and propane torches. Volunteers were present all night long to enable the propane heaters to be operational for the entire project.

In less than three days the final playground included:

  • A Basketball half-court modular tile system with Timberwolves logo ($10,000)

  • Basketball hoops and posts ($7,000).

  • A Rainbow playground structure ($10,500) including a slide, two swings, tire-swing, climbing wall, rope ladder, and rings.

  • A Comet playground structure ($3,000).

  • A Pickleball court painted on asphalt (44’x18’) ($1500).

  • Five games painted on asphalt in a 25’x25’ area: two hopscotch boards, two bean bag toss rings, and a Twister board.

  • Two swing sets ($7,000).

  • Four composite stepping stone posts ($2,000).

  • A semi-truck and fire truck on site for children ($3900).

  • A park bench ($700)

Budget: $65,000

SWAG Family Resource Center Florida

SWAG Family Resource Center

The NC160 Leadership project was an extreme makeover for SWAG Family Resource Center in Gainesville, Florida. Two sisters from the West Indies started the SWAG Family Resource Center. The sisters were immigrants themselves and wanted to give back to the community in their retirement. The center has served over 15,000 patients in 2015 alone. The project transformed the toddler room into a multipurpose room including a library, young children’s play and lounge area, additional tables and chairs, a whiteboard, workstations and rugs. Storage shelving and cabinets were provided for the utility rooms and adolescent room. The team painted the Center including the toddler room, reception area, kitchen, computer area, hallways, and the resource counselor’s office. Storage cabinets were installed in each bathroom over the toilets. The team went through 4000 books, sorted them, and moved them into the new library area after coding them by educational level. They improved the resource counselor’s office by adding a table and chair and a new rug. Outside, they power washed the building, updated, repaired and mulched ten raised gardens. Finally, they updated the front of the building with new plants, new mulch, and garden fencing along the beds.  In doing this, they created a clean, pretty, comfortable, safe place for children to come and do homework, get tutoring, read books and work on the computer. Through this project The Leadership Team transformed the environment at the SWAG Family Resource Center into a space that is warm and inviting. They created a comfortable, safe place for children to hang out and do homework or play games with friends, get tutoring, read books and work on the computer.
