Raleigh, NC — On Monday, November 21st at 9am, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held to celebrate the successful renovation of three play areas for children at the Wake Interfaith Hospitality (WIHN) day center. Thanks to volunteer efforts, children of homeless families will have fun, safe, and supportive environments to grow in while their families make a sustainable transition to independent living.
Two weekends ago, a team of community members, WIHN families and staff, and a team from the WorldLegacy’s Leadership Program collaborated to retrofit an aging playground, refurbish a nursery and playroom, and raise funds to support project costs and purchase new furniture for the WIHN center.
“WIHN is a vital member of our community,” according to Peggy Mattingly, one of the project organizers. “To support their efforts, and make a difference for the children who use the center, is an honor and a privilege.”
The WorldLegacy project work, including removing sand, laying mulch, repairing fences, adding new
landscaping, installing new carpet, painting walls, raising money, and much more was completed in two full days of work with only two weeks of planning. The project was capped by adding painted hand prints of children at the center along the walls of the playroom. This was indeed an extreme makeover.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will mark the completion of the project, and will be held at 903 Method Rd, Raleigh, NC 27606. Volunteers and WIHN staff will be available for comments and interviews immediately following.
Where: 903 Method Rd, Raleigh, NC 27606
Driving directions: Western Blvd to Method Rd, WIHN is on the right on the corner of Method Rd and Jackson immediately past the Food Lion.
When: Media should arrive by 8:45 a.m. Monday, Nov 21, to be in place in time for a 9:00 a.m. start.
Parking: All media vehicles can park on Method Rd.

“My vision and commitment dictate my ways of being and actions”
This LP principle has lived vividly for me in the 2 years since I was in the WorldLegacy leadership program. The trainings, workshops and especially LP have taught me that with unwavering belief and hardcore action, what I say GOES. I am a 2006 corps member of national service program Teach for America, which is a highly selective, rigorous organization dedicated to eradicating educational inequalities in our country.
My application essays were about my LP rewards and challenges…in my interview I spoke about successfully leading a team of people, living my word and taking a stand for my vision. I know the confidence, power, grace and courageousness I exuded every moment demonstrated that I was a world-changing difference maker. I learned in LP that “100% is possible 100% of the time”, so I chose to move across the country with this program and leave everything I knew behind to blaze new trails! Life after LP has been amazing because there is no “after LP.” I’ve learned that I can always create a team of people to support and motivate me. I can always stretch myself and play enrollment games. I can prove I’m an outrageous leader standing for love, abundance and empowerment every day. Because of WorldLegacy Leadership, when one of my students tells me I am the smartest, prettiest, craziest teacher they’ve ever had, I can say “Thank you, I know.”

Press Release
“Blue Bike” Program Launches with Festival
CHAPEL HILL August 19, 2006 The long-awaited bicycle loan collaborative for the area, the “WorldLegacy Blue Bike Program,” will start rolling at the Blue Bike Festival to be held at Weaver Street Realty and WCOM community radio across from Weaver Street Market in Carrboro on Sunday, August 27th from 8:30am-3:00pm. This event is a combination membership drive, fundraiser, and bike collection and painting day for the bikes that will be used in the program.
With the intention to raise community awareness of this new program, three area organizations are uniting to host the festival. Students United for Responsible Global Environment (SURGE), The ReCYCLEry, and The WorldLegacy strongly encourage area residents to stop by to sign up for the program, donate new or used bikes, and learn about other ways to get involved in this unique effort. Local merchants will also have an opportunity to simultaneously serve the community and boost business traffic by volunteering to act as “hubs” for the program.
The Blue Bike Program has been likened to a library system for community transportation. Members can pick up or drop off blue bikes by presenting their membership card at a hub, and use the bikes for up to 24 hours for local travel. SURGE, the key sponsor of the program, plans to establish hubs in Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and the UNC campus. Alison Carpenter, Field Coordinator for SURGE notes, “This novel approach to getting around town is a powerful and positive combination of cleaner air, reduced traffic, new life for used bikes, and true sense of community.” About the sponsoring organizations

SURGE, Students United for a Responsible Global Environment, is a nonviolent network led by students, but not limited to students, dedicated to achieving social, economic, political, and environmental justice through collective education and action.

SeeSaw Studio, a training center in Durham enabling disadvantaged teens to develop professional skills in art and design, is awarded a state-of-the art computer laboratory.
DURHAM – At SeeSaw Studio disadvantaged teens, some referred by the court system, have the opportunity to turn their lives around by preparing themselves for careers in the art and design professions. SeeSaw Studio’s new computer laboratory and state-of-the art design software will be inaugurated Monday, October 16 at a ribbon cutting ceremony at 6:00 pm at SeeSaw Studio, 326 W. Geer Street, Durham, NC. Students will display their portfolios and speak to the public about how SeeSaw Studio training has turned their lives around.
SeeSaw Studio’s mission is to teach design, entrepreneurship, and life skills to inner city youth and providing a safe haven and business and educational opportunities. SeeSaw Studio holds public workshops and an apprenticeship programs for more than 300 pre-teen and teenage youth each year. These workshops address the lack of opportunities for career training in art and design for low-income youth and the chronically high number of teen dropouts from Durham schools.
SeeSaw Studio is the only design and entrepreneurship program in North Carolina that makes available opportunities and training traditionally not found in public school curricula. The program offers opportunities for young designers to create and sell their own work and empowers them to dream big and take personal responsibility for their success. Young designers receive training and experience in a variety of skills including graphic design, Web design, silk screen-printing, welding, and illustration, as well as portfolio preparation, technical writing, and marketing and sales. Students practice interview skills where they dress in business attire, fill out applications, solicit references and apply for jobs.
The new computers, printers and design software were donated by a leadership team from The WorldLegacy in Morrisville, NC that chose SeeSaw Studio for their community service project to promote teen empowerment. WorldLegacy is a coaching company that provides personal effectiveness and leadership workshops for people to live extraordinary lives.

We (NC77) just completed an AMAZING community service project in the domain of ANIMALS. We chose to be in service to Happy Hills Animal Shelter in Staley, NC. Happy Hills is a non-profit shelter that had a fire a couple of years ago. The fire destroyed most of their facility. They have been struggling to rebuild ever since and have been stuck in survival mode. They have been working around the clock at times to provide the animals with care with only a fraction of their workspace and a port-a-jon. The staff of Happy Hills really believes that animals matter, and they ensure that each animal they adopt out will have the greatest experience possible in their new home. They rescue animals and provide them with shelter, food, vet care, and lots of love until they are adopted. Ours was a four part project. First, we declared that we would raise $10,000 for Happy Hills. Next, we declared that we would support Happy Hills by enrolling a construction company to donate some skilled labor to help the staff tackle some of their renovation projects. We also did some research and put together a fundraising plan that Happy Hills can use in coming years as they develop the funds necessary to build a new office space. Finally, we held a large adoption fair and fundraising benefit event for Happy Hills at Barber Park in Greensboro, NC! We had live music, food and games galore! Individuals and local businesses donated materials, entertainment, and prizes for the event. Volunteers from the community showed up and donated their time and energy! The director of Happy Hills was just glowing during the event! It felt incredible to acknowledge a group of highly committed people who usually get very little recognition for the amazing job that they do. We have raised just over 9.000 dollars for Happy Hills and our team is still committed to raising that last 1,000 in days to come!!! We have made an ENORMOUS and lasting difference for the Happy Hills staff and the animals at that shelter. Why? How? Because we said so! All it took was intention and leadership. – Charlene (NC 77)
